Our member’s Riding Assessments offers current full members of the IAM the opportunity to have their current skill level voluntarily assessed against our advanced test standard.
This assessment is particularly suited to members who would like to demonstrate that their skills are of a standard to be added to our F1RST Register.
As a voluntary check of your current skills standard this assessment does not affect your IAM membership status. In the unlikely event that your skills have dipped below the advanced level, then we will simply provide you with a personal report and debrief suggesting the areas that you may wish to develop. Your IAM membership will not be affected.
Get expert help to polish your skills, if there are a few areas that need a refresh then your local IAM RoadSmart group will be delighted to arrange some mentoring for you. Get in touch and see how we can help you.
Your assessment will follow the format and structure of an advanced test and is conducted by one of our Examiners. You will benefit from a comprehensive report and personal feedback session at the end of the drive or ride.
The IAM RoadSmart Masters standard offers the ultimate challenge for civilian riders.
Open to all current IAM members, our Masters programme provides true one-to-one mentoring support and guidance that will help you to attain the highest standard of civilian driving or riding ability in the country.
There are no exemption qualifications to our Masters standard.
Building on your skills as an existing advanced road user, the Masters programme will help to enhance and develop your ability even further in the following areas:
- Applying cornering principles
- Assessing, planning and executing safe overtaking manoeuvres
- Recognising opportunities to make safe progress (within the speed limits)
- Improving observation, anticipation and awareness consistent with vehicle speed
- Applying sound judgement of speed and distance
- Delivering a fluent, relevant and continuous commentary

How to become on of our F1rst members
• IAM RoadSmart F1RST Register recognises excellence during our advanced driver or rider tests.
• Members will receive a special certificate complete with the F1RST logo. Their names are also entered into the first register.
How to get on the F1RST Register
• F1RST membership is attained by taking the advanced motorcycle test and achieving a score of 1 in every* category.
• Existing IAM members may take a Member’s Assessment in order to try and achieve the all 1s score*.
• Riders who hold the equivalent of a police advanced qualification may join the IAM and will be awarded a F1RST status

If you’d like your next challenge with us to involve, you, your car or bike and a top British motor racing circuit then you are in the right place!
IAM RoadSmart arranges a number of closed-road circuit based Skills Days for our members to develop additional skills and knowledge with expert tuition on safe closed road environments.
These are not race days but rather skills development days that enable you to understand and develop the capability and performance of both you and your machine.
Non-members and family and friends are also welcome as we cater for first-time circuit attendees to those who regularly brush up their advanced skills in this way.
If you love your driving or riding then why not share your passion by becoming an IAM observer?
Observing with is a thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable way to help make our roads safer by coaching and mentoring drivers and riders to be the best that they can be. You’ll volunteer to provide these skills through our national group network.
As an observer with the IAM you’ll provide one to one observed drives or rides as part of a local IAM group. These generally fall into regular times and patterns to fit in with your other commitments, they can vary by group and we can currently promise to keep you as busy as you wish to be with our associates waiting to start their courses!
Existing observers will tell you that the pleasure and satisfaction of hearing that your latest associate has passed his advanced test is a wonderful feeling and the gratitude and thanks you’ll receive will make you feel ten feet tall!

If you enjoy straying away from tarmac or fancy giving a bit of off-roading a go for the first time, the UK’s vast network of legal green lanes may be just the answer.
There are a huge number of green lanes around that vary in difficulty, so there truly is something for everyone if you’re looking for motorcycle green laning.
Some green lanes are big-bike friendly and are more than suitable enough for the large capacity adventure motorcycles many of us have. But taking on the varied terrain on a smaller capacity trail bike will open up a whole new world of fun.
